Gut bacteria help brain cell growth

June 2, 2025 • 12:35 PM

Antibiotics have been shown to have a profound effect on the growth of new brain cells and memory retention in mice. A recent study has shown that antibiotics can wipe out good gut bacteria and that they can also prevent the growth of new brain cells. There is little previous evidence showing links between the brain and bacteria in the gut.

A new study by scientists at the University of Magdeburg and the Max-Delbrueck Centre for Molecular Medicine, Berlin, found that prolonged antibiotic use...

How forgetting helps us learn

June 2, 2025 • 12:35 PM

Our brain is a complicated part of our body. We knew that...but that knowledge does not stop us from being taken aback because a study has just found out that we may be forgetting to remember! There is a kind of memory that is formed based on new experiences containing spatial information. When we retain data such as where an object was positioned or what was the place where something happened, we are 'learning'. This creates what is known as an episodic memory. Stuck with your Ex's DNA

June 2, 2025 • 12:35 PM

To be told that you look like your father can be a comforting thing. To be told that you look like your mother's ex-boyfriend is more than just a little disconcerting, to say the least! A recent study using Neriid flies has shown that offspring resembled the mother's previous sexual partners more than the male that actually fertilized the egg.

Dr. Russell Bonduriansky of the University of New South Wales, Australia commented that his research is an 'example of the surprising possibilities that...

Burning sugars to light up brown fat

June 2, 2025 • 12:35 PM

Do you recognize that warmth when you wake up on a cold morning snuggled under a blanket? A recent study reveals that you owe this glorious feeling to a unique type of fat cell - the brown fat.

This fat cell is unlike it's cousin- the white fat, which is typically stored around the waist causing obesity when in excess and distressing when you stand in front of a mirror! In fact an abundance of brown fat is associated with being lean and a low glucose level- a sugar, excesses of which causes...

Life happens, coffee helps..

June 2, 2025 • 12:35 PM

Consider your morning; your alarm goes off, you get up and get dressed, probably yawn and then pour yourself a nice mug of coffee to allow you to start the day. This general routine is carried out by millions and is seen as nothing more than wake-up call. However, a recently published study on the benefits of coffee has found that drinking one to five cups of coffee a day, both caffeinated and decaffeinated, actually lowers the risk of total mortality (or death). Coffee is one of the most...
