Russia Proposes Second Round of Ukraine Peace Talks for Monday

Thu 29th May, 2025

In a bid to resolve the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, Russia has suggested a new round of direct negotiations with the Ukrainian government to discuss a ceasefire, scheduled for this coming Monday. The talks are set to take place in Istanbul, as confirmed by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, according to state news agency Tass. The Russian delegation is prepared to present a memorandum to the Ukrainian team during this meeting. However, Ukraine has insisted on receiving the memorandum in advance.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha expressed expectations for the Russian side to ensure the success of the upcoming talks by promptly submitting their proposals, as previously agreed. Lavrov stated that the memorandum outlines Russia's position regarding all aspects necessary for effectively addressing the fundamental causes of the crisis.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov mentioned that he had already submitted a document reflecting Ukraine's stance to the chief negotiator from Russia. He emphasized that Ukraine is open to further discussions with Russian representatives and is awaiting the memorandum to ensure that the meeting is productive and moves closer to ending the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is calling for increased international pressure on Russia to bring an end to the aggression. He noted that there is currently no indication of willingness from Kremlin leader Vladimir Putin to negotiate, stating that there is insufficient pressure being exerted by leading global powers. Zelenskyy remarked that while the United States is engaged, their efforts are not comprehensive. He criticized other nations, including China and various countries in the Global South, for their reluctance to actively participate in the resolution of the conflict.

Zelenskyy emphasized the need for a just peace, which he believes can only be achieved after Putin's departure from power. He indicated that an immediate truce is achievable, suggesting that peace could begin with a ceasefire followed by subsequent steps towards lasting resolution.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump has expressed hesitance regarding new sanctions against Russia, while simultaneously issuing an ultimatum to Putin. He remarked that the United States would assess whether Russia is being deceitful, and if so, a different response would be warranted. Trump conveyed disappointment over recent events, highlighting that casualties occurred during negotiations.

As the conflict continues, Ukraine remains vigilant against a potential large-scale assault in the northeastern region. The country has been defending itself with Western support against the Russian invasion for over three years. During recent negotiations in Istanbul, the only significant outcome was a prisoner exchange. Although Ukraine agreed to a U.S.-proposed 30-day ceasefire, Russia has yet to comply and has intensified drone attacks, marking some of the most severe assaults since the onset of the war. There are no signs of Russia retreating from its maximalist demands. According to Zelenskyy, Russia has amassed approximately 50,000 troops for a possible offensive in the Sumy region of northeastern Ukraine. Additionally, Ukrainian drones have caused disturbances in Moscow, with reports indicating that air traffic at Vnukovo Airport was temporarily halted due to incoming unmanned aerial vehicles.
