75 Austrian Soldiers Deployed to Lebanon for UN Mission

Fri 23rd May, 2025

On Friday, a ceremonial send-off took place for 75 soldiers from the Austrian Armed Forces as they prepare to join the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This deployment, initiated by Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner, underscores the vital role of peacekeepers in a world where their presence is increasingly needed.

The Minister emphasized the significance of overseas missions, noting that they affect not only the soldiers but also their families and loved ones, highlighting the personal sacrifices involved. The soldiers are set to embark on their mission on May 29, coinciding with the International Day of UN Peacekeepers, and will serve in Lebanon for a duration of six months, with the possibility of extension.

With this latest rotation, the total number of Austrian personnel in Lebanon will rise to 154 soldiers and eight female soldiers. Major Gerald Aichholzer, responsible for the contingent, reported a slight easing of tensions in southern Lebanon, attributing this to the Israeli military's withdrawal from significant areas. While sporadic attacks are still occurring from various factions, the current assessment indicates that the Austrian soldiers face no imminent threat.

Austria's contribution to the mission is recognized for its logistical expertise, with the deployed personnel comprising drivers, mechanics, medics, logisticians, and firefighters, all of whom have undergone rigorous training in preparation for their roles over the past month. Austria has been participating in the UNIFIL mission since November 2011.

The ceremony not only marked the departure of the soldiers but also celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Austrian Peacekeepers Association, which includes both active and former soldiers involved in international missions.

UNIFIL currently consists of nearly 10,000 personnel from various nations, including Indonesia, India, Ghana, Italy, and Nepal. The mandate of the mission has faced scrutiny and is subject to annual renewal due to ongoing conflicts in the region. Since its inception, UNIFIL has tragically lost 326 soldiers, including an Austrian peacekeeper, Major Hans Peter Lang, who died during an Israeli airstrike on a UN observation post in southern Lebanon in July 2006.
