Increase in Vandalism Against Tesla Vehicles Reported in Austria

Wed 16th Apr, 2025

Recent reports indicate a concerning trend of vandalism targeting Tesla vehicles in Austria, with approximately ten incidents documented between January and April of this year. This marks a slight rise in comparison to the previous year, as per data from the Austrian Federal Criminal Police Office. Despite this uptick, the overall number of reported cases remains relatively low.

Interestingly, there has been no reported increase in thefts involving Tesla vehicles or their parts during this same period. The trend of electric vehicles continues to grow in Austria, even as the overall new registration numbers in the European Union decline. In January and February alone, only 489 new Tesla vehicles were registered in Austria, reflecting a significant decrease of 61%, according to Statistics Austria data analyzed by the APA.

This decline in registrations may be linked to the controversies surrounding Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, who has recently faced backlash for his role as an advisor to former U.S. President Donald Trump. Musk's statements expressing support for right-wing political movements in Europe have also raised eyebrows, potentially influencing public perception of the brand.

Despite these challenges, the electric vehicle market continues to evolve, with many consumers still drawn to the innovative technology and sustainability that Tesla represents. The incidents of vandalism, while troubling, do not appear to have significantly deterred interest in electric vehicles overall.

As the automotive landscape shifts towards more environmentally friendly options, it remains to be seen how public sentiment will continue to shape the future of electric vehicles in Austria and beyond.
