On May 15, 2025, approximately 270 soldiers took their oath of allegiance to the Republic of Austria in a ceremonial event held at the iconic Schloss Belvedere in Vienna. This occasion commemorated the 70th anniversary of the signing of the State Treaty, which restored Austria's independence.
The ceremony was attended by key figures including the Minister of Defense, Brigadier Kurt Wagner, and various representatives from political, economic, and military sectors. The Minister highlighted the significance of the location, noting that it symbolizes freedom, neutrality, and the resilience of Austria.
New recruits from the Guard will serve as infantry soldiers and provide support to the President, government officials, and military chiefs during official functions, state visits, and receptions for foreign dignitaries. Moreover, the soldiers stationed at the Military Command in Vienna play a crucial role in maintaining operational activities and military infrastructure, which encompasses over 20 government buildings, barracks, and shooting ranges in the city.
Brigadier Wagner expressed gratitude to the recruits for their commitment to serve in the Austrian Armed Forces, particularly during challenging times. He emphasized that the site of the oath-taking is fitting, as it marks the birthplace of a free and independent Austria following the State Treaty signed at Schloss Belvedere 70 years ago. This year not only marks the restoration of sovereignty for Austria since 1955 but also celebrates seven decades of the Austrian Armed Forces, which plays a vital role in safeguarding the nation.
The Austrian State Treaty was signed on May 15, 1955, in the Upper Belvedere and was publicly announced by Foreign Minister Leopold Figl from the balcony. Following ratification by Austria and the occupying powers--the Soviet Union, the USA, France, and the UK--the treaty came into force on July 27, leading to the official end of occupation on October 25, 1955. Austria regained full sovereignty, after which the National Council enacted the constitutional law on Austria's neutrality. A decade later, on October 26, the National Council designated this date as Austria's National Day.
