Romanian Fighter Jet Neutralizes Explosive Sea Drone Near Black Sea Gas Platform

A Romanian F-16 fighter jet successfully destroyed an explosive-laden sea drone near the Neptun Alpha offshore gas production platform in the Black Sea, according to the country's Ministry of Defence. The incident occurred after the Romanian Coast Guard detected an unidentified unmanned object just a few hundred meters from the platform, prompting an immediate security response.

Upon notification, a crisis unit was established by Romanian authorities, who then sought and received operational command approval from NATO. Two fighter jets from the Romanian Air Force were dispatched to neutralize the threat, given the significant risk posed to workers at the offshore facility. The sea drone, reportedly equipped with explosive materials, was eliminated using the aircraft's onboard cannon. The resulting explosion confirmed the presence of explosives aboard the unmanned device.

Following the incident, Romanian authorities contacted Ukrainian officials to determine the drone's origin. Ukrainian representatives clarified that the object was not of Ukrainian manufacture or operation.

This event follows a similar security concern that occurred ten days prior, when Romanian military divers neutralized two floating aerial drones, identified as Gerbera-type, in the vicinity of the same gas platform. These repeated incidents have raised ongoing security concerns for key infrastructure in the region.

The Neptun Deep project, which includes the Neptun Alpha platform, is Romania's largest natural gas development, situated in the nation's sector of the Black Sea. The venture is jointly managed by Petrom, a subsidiary of Austria's OMV, and the Romanian state-owned energy company Romgaz. As critical infrastructure, these platforms are vital to Romania's energy supply and economic interests, making their security a top priority for national authorities.

Regional security analysts note that the increasing prevalence of unmanned and explosive-laden devices in the Black Sea area is part of a broader trend affecting maritime infrastructure worldwide.
