Surprising Encounter: 94-Year-Old Nun Meets Pope in St. Peter's Basilica

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

In a remarkable and unexpected moment, two elderly wheelchair users crossed paths in the usually bustling St. Peter's Basilica, now eerily quiet. On a Sunday morning, Pope Francis, aged 88, met Sister Francesca Battiloro, a 94-year-old nun from Naples, as reported by Vatican News. Sister Francesca, who has been visually impaired and uses a wheelchair, received special permission to visit the Holy Door of the Vatican Basilica, accompanied by a small group of aides, away from the usual crowds of pilgrims.

During her visit, she encountered the Pope, who was also making a quiet pilgrimage as part of the Catholic Holy Year 2025. This occasion coincided with thousands of sick pilgrims gathering for the 'Holy Year Celebration of the Sick.' In an interview after the meeting, Sister Francesca expressed her joy and referred to the encounter as a divine gift. She had long wished to meet the Pope, and she felt that God had orchestrated this moment for her.

Later that same day, Pope Francis surprised attendees at a significant mass for the sick and healthcare workers held in St. Peter's Square. He was wheeled to the altar, where he, alongside Archbishop Rino Fisichella, who officiated the service, offered a blessing to the participants. Many of the approximately 20,000 attendees were engaged in personal prayer when the Pope unexpectedly arrived at the altar area in his wheelchair.

After delivering his brief greeting and wishing everyone a pleasant Sunday, the crowd responded with enthusiastic applause. Observers noted that the Pope appeared to struggle slightly to raise his arms, a reminder of his ongoing health challenges. He was seen using oxygen tubes, a common sight for him during public appearances.
