April 11, 2025 - A recent survey conducted by the Educational Alliance of the German Mittelstand reveals that 90% of medium-sized enterprises are advocating for a greater emphasis on practical education in Germany's schooling system. This overwhelming demand highlights a significant disconnect between educational frameworks and the realities faced by businesses.
Prof. Dr. Martin Wortmann, General Secretary of the Educational Alliance, expressed concerns that the current educational approach fails to address the practical needs of businesses. He noted that this disconnect leads to misunderstandings regarding business operations and sets unrealistic expectations among graduates entering the workforce.
The findings indicate that the Mittelstand is experiencing a loss of flexibility and declining innovation due to a lack of relevant educational training. Wortmann emphasized that while financial investment in educational infrastructure is necessary, it is equally important to modernize the educational system structurally.
According to Wortmann, the focus should not solely be on funding but also on implementing strategic reforms that address the specific challenges faced by the education sector. He urged the new government to take a collaborative approach with regional authorities to ensure that educational practices align better with industry needs.
One of the key recommendations from the Educational Alliance is for schools to gain more autonomy, particularly in terms of budget management. This would foster a greater sense of responsibility among educators and enhance the respect afforded to teaching professionals. Furthermore, the establishment of well-equipped workshops in schools is seen as essential for fostering practical skills and technical understanding among students.
The Educational Alliance also stressed the need for educators with practical experience who can effectively integrate theoretical knowledge with hands-on training. This approach, they argue, will prepare students better for the demands of the labor market.
Wortmann concluded that a shift towards experiential learning is crucial for the future of vocational and professional training in Germany. By fostering a more practical approach to education, the Mittelstand can be assured of a capable workforce that meets the evolving demands of the economy.
