High-Ranking Russian Official to Visit Washington Amid Ukraine Conflict

In a significant development concerning the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, the Kremlin has confirmed that Kirill Dmitrijew, a senior Russian official, plans to travel to Washington for discussions with U.S. Special Envoy Steve Witkoff. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitri Peskow indicated that such a visit is feasible and that Russia continues to engage in dialogue with the United States regarding the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine through various channels.

This trip, which would mark the first visit of a senior Russian official to the U.S. since the start of the war, follows Dmitrijew's previous representation of Russia at a negotiation round in Saudi Arabia. However, he currently remains on U.S. sanctions lists, which poses a challenge for his entry into the country unless the sanctions are temporarily lifted.

Amid these diplomatic efforts, U.S. President Donald Trump has recently commented on the possibility of imposing additional sanctions against Russia if President Vladimir Putin hesitates to engage in peace talks regarding Ukraine. Peskow responded by accusing Ukraine of being uncooperative, asserting that Putin remains open to negotiations, while claiming that Kyiv is unwilling to pursue this pathway. He cited Russia's adherence to a moratorium on strikes against Ukrainian energy facilities as evidence of their commitment to peace.

Two weeks prior, Trump and Putin had agreed on a partial ceasefire during a phone call, which included provisions to spare energy infrastructures from attacks. Following this, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed his agreement to the ceasefire terms. However, both nations have accused each other of violating this agreement, complicating the peace process.

Recent reports indicate that Zelenskyy has accused Russia of breaching the ceasefire, as Ukrainian regions have faced renewed aerial assaults after a temporary lull. He expressed concerns that Putin is unwilling to uphold even a partial ceasefire, emphasizing the need for increased pressure on Russia to expedite the end of the conflict.

In the Sumy region, a drone reportedly struck a transformer station, while artillery fire in Dnipropetrovsk damaged a power line, leading to power outages for nearly 4,000 residents. Conversely, Russia accused Ukraine of attacking two energy facilities within its territory over the last 24 hours.

Casualties have continued to mount, with reports from the Zaporizhzhia region indicating at least one fatality and several injuries due to ongoing attacks. In Kharkiv, a significant drone assault injured eight individuals, targeting both civilian infrastructure and nearby residential buildings.

According to Ukrainian air defense reports, Russia launched a considerable assault involving 74 drones and drone decoys, with 41 intercepted. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have destroyed 93 Ukrainian drones over its territory, particularly in the Kursk border region.

Additionally, the Russian military reportedly destroyed one of its own dams in the Belgorod border area using an aerial bomb. The attack, captured on video, was executed near the village of Popovka, close to the Ukrainian border. This action is believed to be a strategic move to obstruct the movement of heavy Ukrainian armored vehicles.

Fighting has intensified around the locality of Demidowka, with Ukrainian forces previously controlling a significant area in the neighboring Kursk region, although recent reports suggest they have largely withdrawn.

The conflict has persisted for over three years, with both sides frequently utilizing drones for assaults. However, the extent of damage and casualties inflicted upon Ukraine by Russian forces remains disproportionate to the retaliatory strikes undertaken by Ukraine.
