Hessen's Interior Minister Roman Poseck is contemplating a ban on upcoming youth protests planned for November 20, following violent clashes in Frankfurt over the weekend. These demonstrations, driven by young people's demands for more investment in education and health, along with opposition to conscription, culminated in significant unrest in the city on Saturday.
The protests, organized by the initiatives 'Gen Z regelt' and 'Generation Aufbruch', escalated into riots and looting in Frankfurt, resulting in more than 100 police officers being injured amid the chaos. Speaking to ARD's 'Tagesthemen', Poseck expressed concerns about the ability of organizers to ensure peaceful demonstrations, stating that the protest leaders do not have the events under control.
He emphasized that while the right to assembly is a fundamental freedom, it cannot supersede public safety. Poseck warned that violent assemblies would not be tolerated. Reports indicated that, despite a largely peaceful turnout, certain elements within the rally engaged in violent confrontations with police, including 'massive attacks' on officers, according to Poseck.
The Interior Minister specifically pointed to the involvement of youth with migrant backgrounds in the disturbances, declaring a need for heightened awareness and oversight of such groups moving forward. 'This group of offenders was predominantly shaped by migrant backgrounds,' Poseck noted, stressing that this pattern of involvement needs addressing without resorting to taboo topics. He insisted that this focus would also protect the many individuals with a migrant background who abide by the law.
Despite the violent outcome in Frankfurt, the organizing group 'Gen Z regelt' has vowed to press on with their protest actions. They plan to participate in a broader European protest effort scheduled for November 20, known as the 'International Youth Strike Day'.
Political condemnation of the violent incidents has been widespread, transcending party lines and spotlighting the emerging challenge of managing youth protests that descend into violence. In the aftermath of the Frankfurt events, similar protests occurred in other German cities such as Cologne, Hamburg, and Berlin. While these demonstrations saw clashes with police, the level of violence did not reach the same extent as those in Frankfurt.
During the Frankfurt unrest, rioters hurled stones and incendiaries, shattered storefronts, and engaged in looting. The events prompted officials and commentators alike to call for a reassessment of how youth-driven demands, particularly regarding educational reforms, are addressed by the state.
The tumultuous weekend has prompted authorities to consider preventative measures to ensure future demonstrations in Frankfurt and beyond occur peacefully. Poseck's statements suggest a rigorous approach to future youth protests in an effort to thwart any potential for escalation into violent disorder.
