Devastation in Burma: Aftershock of Earthquake and Heavy Rains

Mon 7th Apr, 2025

Ten days have passed since a powerful earthquake measuring 7.7 struck Burma (Myanmar), and the death toll continues to rise sharply. As reported by the ruling military junta, 3,514 bodies have been recovered, while 210 individuals remain unaccounted for. The majority of fatalities occurred around Mandalay, the country's second-largest city, where over 2,100 residents lost their lives. However, rescue workers and eyewitnesses express concerns that the actual death toll may be significantly higher.

Compounding the tragedy, heavy rainfall has begun to inundate the affected regions, hampering relief efforts and exacerbating conditions for those displaced. Media reports indicate that tents and makeshift clinics established by international aid teams have been destroyed by the downpour and strong winds. Local meteorologists have warned of potential flooding and landslides as the rainy season approaches in Burma.

The military junta has declared that rescue operations for the missing have ceased, and cleanup efforts are now underway. Reports from the news portal Burma Now suggest that authorities are struggling to manage the transportation of the deceased, leading to overcrowded morgues. Mass cremations are reportedly taking place in the open.

Observers have noted that the area is overwhelmed by the stench of decomposing bodies, making it nearly impossible to remain there. Many survivors are too fearful to return to their homes due to ongoing aftershocks and continue to sleep outdoors.

According to Tom Fletcher, a coordinator for UN humanitarian aid, the impact of the earthquake is disproportionately affecting the poorest communities, who lack the resources necessary for survival and recovery. Reports indicate that Sagaing, one of the hardest-hit cities, has experienced approximately 80 percent destruction.

Frequent internet outages further complicate the situation, making it difficult to obtain reliable information. This challenge is compounded by the political instability in Burma, which has been under military rule since a coup in 2021, resulting in widespread chaos and violence.
