Alarming Rise in Child Sexual Violence in the Democratic Republic of Congo

The United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) has raised serious concerns regarding the escalating violence against minors in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). According to statements made by a UNICEF representative in Goma, shocking reports indicate that even toddlers and preschool-aged children are falling victim to sexual assault.

Since the beginning of the year, the M23 rebel group has intensified its offensive in the region, reportedly supported by Rwanda, resulting in the capture of Goma, the provincial capital. The violence has led to the displacement of over 230,000 individuals, forcing families to flee their homes amid the conflict.

During peak fighting periods, statistics reveal that a child or adolescent was assaulted approximately every thirty minutes. In just the months of January and February, UNICEF reported a staggering 10,000 incidents of rape and other forms of sexual violence, with minors comprising up to 45 percent of the victims.

One harrowing case involved a 13-year-old girl who became pregnant following an assault. Due to her young age and physical development, she required a cesarean section for the delivery. Reports indicate that the girl expressed her distress, stating her confusion about motherhood at such a young age.

UNICEF has highlighted that many survivors of these atrocities are not receiving adequate support due to widespread cuts in humanitarian aid from various countries. As a result, numerous victims are unable to access essential medical treatment, including preventive care for potential HIV exposure.

UNICEF officials have emphasized the dire situation faced by these young girls and women, stating they endure unimaginable suffering without even the most basic medical services required for recovery.
