Two emerging medical professionals have been recognized for their exceptional academic work in the field of human medicine through the Young Physicians Research Award, established by the Medical Chamber of Lower Austria (ÄKNÖ). This annual award aims to highlight and support innovative research initiatives conducted by early-career doctors in the region, fostering scientific progress and making medical research more visible to the public.

The Young Physicians Research Award is divided into two categories: the most outstanding dissertation or PhD thesis, which receives a prize of 5,000 euros, and the top master's thesis, awarded 3,000 euros. The selection process is overseen by an independent panel consisting of representatives from renowned institutions such as the Karl Landsteiner Private University for Health Sciences, Danube Private University, University for Continuing Education Krems, Karl Landsteiner Society, and the Medical Society of Lower Austria. This expert jury evaluates all submissions based on criteria such as scientific innovation, relevance, and potential impact on the medical field.

In the latest round, Katharina Tscherny was recognized for her research, which focused on the early exclusion of heart attacks in patients presenting with chest pain. Her work contributes to improving diagnostic accuracy and patient outcomes in emergency medicine. Matthias Luft received the award for his dissertation centered on enhancing the interface between humans and prosthetic devices, providing valuable insights into the advancement of medical technology and rehabilitation.

The award initiative was launched just over a year ago and is intended to encourage young medical professionals in Lower Austria to continue their scientific endeavors. The Medical Chamber emphasizes that the award also serves to strengthen the region's expertise and capacities in medical research. Entries for the next cycle are open to young physicians with ties to Lower Austria, with applications accepted until late February 2026. The awards ceremony is scheduled to take place in autumn 2026.

Both recipients bring notable experience to their fields. Matthias Luft is currently serving as a resident physician specializing in plastic, aesthetic, and reconstructive surgery at the Hospital of the Brothers of Mercy in Salzburg, following previous clinical work at the University Hospital St. Pölten. Katharina Tscherny completed her general medical training at several institutions, including LK Scheibbs and UK St. Pölten, and is presently working as a general practitioner at the LK Scheibbs Institute for Radiology. She is also qualified as an emergency physician and registered nurse.

The Medical Chamber of Lower Austria reiterates its commitment to bolstering the next generation of doctors by promoting excellence in research. By recognizing innovative and forward-looking projects, the award seeks to solidify the region's standing in medical science and encourage the ongoing pursuit of scientific knowledge among young healthcare professionals.
