Wave of Bank ATM Explosions Continues in Donaustadt

In a troubling escalation of criminal activity, another incident of ATM explosions has occurred in Austria, with the latest event taking place in the Donaustadt district of Vienna. Following the detonation of two cash machines at a bank branch just ten days prior, an explosion was reported early Sunday morning at a supermarket location in the eastern part of the city.

According to the local police authority, the call to emergency services was received shortly after 3:45 AM. Upon arrival at the scene, law enforcement officers discovered a severely damaged ATM situated in the foyer of the supermarket. Initial investigations suggest that the perpetrators, identified as two male suspects, first broke the glass sliding door of the establishment before igniting explosives within the foyer area.

The suspects managed to escape the scene on a motorcycle or moped, taking with them an undisclosed amount of cash. Despite the immediate launch of a manhunt, the suspects fled towards Saikogasse, evading capture.

This latest incident is part of a disturbing trend of ATM explosions occurring at a high frequency across the region. The current week began with a similar crime in the Liesing district of Vienna, marking the 23rd reported case since January 1, 2025, according to data from the Federal Criminal Police Office.

In a separate incident, an attempted ATM explosion occurred in Brunn am Gebirge, located in the Mödling district of Lower Austria, but the attempt did not result in any successful detonation.

Authorities have established a dedicated investigative team to tackle this series of crimes, which is believed to be orchestrated by a criminal organization operating out of the Netherlands. The Vienna State Criminal Police has taken over the investigation, and they are appealing to the public for any information that could aid in apprehending the suspects.
