Ukrainian Security Service Claims Responsibility for Crimean Bridge Explosion

Tue 3rd Jun, 2025

In a significant escalation of tensions, the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU) announced on Tuesday that it successfully executed an underwater explosion targeting the road and rail bridge connecting Russia to the Crimean Peninsula. According to the SBU, approximately 1,100 kilograms of explosives were detonated early in the morning, damaging the underwater pillars of the bridge, a vital supply route for Russian military operations in Ukraine.

The SBU described the bridge as structurally unsound, noting that this attack marks the third time it has been struck in recent months. This latest operation was reportedly months in the making, showcasing Ukraine's strategic capabilities.

In a related development, over the weekend, Ukrainian forces achieved a notable success against Russian military assets, claiming the destruction of several bombers, including Tupolev Tu-95 and Tu-22 aircraft, as well as specialized early-warning planes, Beriev A-50. Reports suggest that Ukrainian combat drones were launched from concealed positions, utilizing modified wooden structures on trucks for covert operations. These drones executed precise strikes against Russian bombers, indicating a potential shift in the operational dynamics of the conflict.

Meanwhile, the situation on the ground in Ukraine remains dire, with recent Russian airstrikes resulting in multiple casualties. In the northeastern city of Sumy, at least three individuals were killed, and sixteen others injured due to indiscriminate shelling, which President Volodymyr Zelensky condemned as brutal and indiscriminate. He urged the international community to increase pressure on Russia in response to these attacks.

On Tuesday, a Russian airstrike in the small town of Balakliya claimed one life, while reports from various regions of Ukraine indicated a rising toll from ongoing Russian bombardments. Authorities confirmed that at least five individuals lost their lives in different frontline areas due to the attacks.

Additionally, the Ukrainian Air Force reported a series of assaults involving Russian drone strikes across several regions, including Chernihiv, Kharkiv, Sumy, Odessa, and Donetsk, prompting widespread air raid alerts throughout the country. Concerns were raised regarding a potential Russian hypersonic missile strike on Kyiv, with reports of hits recorded near Mykolayiv in the south, although initial assessments did not provide details on the extent of damage.
