US and China Set to Discuss Tariffs in Switzerland

Wed 7th May, 2025

Amid ongoing trade tensions, high-level discussions between the United States and China are scheduled to take place on May 8 in Switzerland. According to a statement from the US Treasury Department, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will meet with He Lifeng, a senior economic official from China, to address critical trade issues.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has confirmed the meeting, indicating that both nations recognize the importance of dialogue in resolving their trade conflict. The discussions come as the US has recently reached out to China to express a desire to negotiate matters related to tariffs and other trade-related concerns.

In a statement from the Chinese side, it was highlighted that any dialogue must occur on the basis of mutual respect and equality. China emphasized that constructive negotiations could only happen if the US acknowledged the implications of its tariff policies and corrected what it termed as erroneous practices.

Bessent, in an interview with a news outlet, emphasized that the initial focus of the discussions would be on establishing a framework for communication. He indicated a belief that the primary objective would be de-escalation rather than reaching an expansive trade agreement immediately, noting that progress would require first addressing the tensions.

The upcoming meeting is expected to occur over the weekend, coinciding with Bessent's trip to Europe, where he plans to engage with Swiss officials regarding the trade conflict. The overlap in schedules has facilitated the meeting with the Chinese delegation in Switzerland.

Both nations share a vested interest in resolving their differences, particularly as current tariffs are likened to an embargo. Since the escalation of trade disputes in early April, US President Donald Trump has imposed additional tariffs of up to 145% on various Chinese imports. In retaliation, China has responded with its own tariffs of 125% on US goods.

Despite the urgency for dialogue, recent mixed messages from the Trump administration have created uncertainty regarding the status of negotiations. While Trump initially suggested that discussions were ongoing, statements from the Chinese Foreign Ministry contradicted this, indicating a lack of communication.
