The trial of an 18-year-old male accused of orchestrating a potential terrorist attack targeting a major cultural event in Stockholm has begun in a high-security courtroom. Authorities allege that the suspect had advanced preparations to carry out an attack during the Stockholm Culture Festival, a popular gathering that attracts large crowds in the city center.
According to the prosecution, the suspect was apprehended in February following extensive surveillance and an intervention by special police forces. Investigators claim the individual had visited the prospective attack site multiple times to gather information and had actively worked on assembling an explosive device. Evidence acquired during the investigation suggests that the suspect possessed detailed instructions, ingredients, and instructional videos, enabling him to potentially create a bomb vest capable of causing significant harm.
Intelligence officials note that the 18-year-old initially discussed potential attacks in other countries, such as France or Israel, but ultimately focused on the Stockholm event. The Swedish Security Service (Säpo) reported that the suspect utilized advanced AI tools, including ChatGPT, to identify high-profile events in Sweden that would attract large audiences.
During the operation, an undercover police informant posed as an extremist and established contact with the suspect. The informant provided him with inoperative weapons, which the suspect was photographed holding. Law enforcement emphasized that these weapons were rendered harmless and posed no actual threat.
In addition to the alleged plans in Sweden, the proceedings also address accusations related to a suspected attempted murder in southern Germany in August 2024 and participation in a terrorist organization, specifically the Islamic State (IS). Prosecutors assert that the suspect, together with a 17-year-old co-defendant, traveled to Germany with the intention of killing an individual. The plan reportedly involved purchasing a knife for the attack, but the attempt was thwarted when an unexpected person opened the door at the intended location. The 17-year-old denies any involvement in the crimes, while the 18-year-old admits to issuing unlawful threats and being present in Germany, but denies the attempted murder charge. He has acknowledged participation in a terrorist organization, a claim he had previously rejected.
The trial is being conducted with heightened security measures, including a significant police presence and the use of reinforced weaponry. Due to the sensitive nature of the case, as well as the age of the defendants, substantial portions of the hearings are closed to the public to protect investigative methods and personal privacy.
Authorities revealed that the 18-year-old resided in a state-run care facility in Skåne, southern Sweden. His parents reported him to police after observing signs of radicalization and receiving threats, including an incident in which he threatened to harm his mother.
The trial is scheduled to continue over several days, with further examination of the terrorism-related charges due in the coming week. The case has prompted heightened awareness regarding security at public events but, according to city officials, there is currently no specific threat directed at the Stockholm Culture Festival.
