The presidential election in the Republika Srpska, the Serb-majority entity within Bosnia and Herzegovina, has resulted in a victory for Sinisa Karan of the Alliance of Independent Social Democrats (SNSD). Preliminary official results indicate that Karan secured 50.85 percent of the votes, placing him ahead of Branko Blanusa of the Serbian Democratic Party (SDS), who garnered 47.8 percent. These figures are based on the count from 92.79 percent of polling stations, as announced by the Central Election Commission.
The election was necessitated by the exclusion of former president Milorad Dodik from political office, following a court ruling that barred him from holding any public position for six years. Dodik, a prominent figure in the SNSD and a strong advocate for the autonomy of Republika Srpska, has long pushed for greater separation from the central Bosnian government.
Bosnia and Herzegovina comprises two main entities: the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, predominantly inhabited by Bosniaks and Croats, and the Republika Srpska, home primarily to ethnic Serbs. There is also the Brcko District, which holds a special administrative status. The country's political structure was established by the Dayton Peace Agreement, which ended the conflict in the mid-1990s and defined a complex system of governance designed to ensure representation for all major ethnic groups.
Approximately 1.2 million eligible voters in Republika Srpska were able to cast their ballots until 18:00 on Sunday. The newly elected president is expected to serve only a short term, as nationwide parliamentary and presidential elections are scheduled for October 2026. This election is seen as significant in shaping the political direction of Republika Srpska in the lead-up to the broader national vote.
Republika Srpska constitutes nearly half of Bosnia and Herzegovina's territory and is home to about one-third of the nation's 3.5 million inhabitants. The entity operates with considerable autonomy, but its relationship with the central government remains a point of ongoing political tension. The international community, represented by the High Representative appointed under the Dayton Agreement, retains significant oversight powers to ensure the country's peace and stability. These powers are intended to maintain the delicate balance among Bosnia's constituent peoples and prevent unilateral moves that could undermine the peace process.
The SNSD, under Dodik's leadership, has frequently challenged the authority of the central government and the role of the High Representative. Dodik's calls for increased autonomy and, at times, outright separatism, have drawn criticism from international actors who view such rhetoric as a threat to Bosnia's territorial integrity and the post-war settlement.
Despite these tensions, the election proceeded without major incidents, and the results reflect a closely contested race between the ruling SNSD and the opposition SDS. Observers note that the short tenure of the new president may limit the scope for significant policy shifts before the upcoming national elections. Nevertheless, the outcome underscores the ongoing divisions within Bosnian society and highlights the continuing influence of nationalist parties in the region's political landscape.
