New Regulations for Family Benefits for Ukrainian Refugees

Tue 30th Sep, 2025

The Austrian government has reached an agreement on new regulations concerning family benefits for Ukrainian refugees. As of now, the eligibility for displaced individuals to receive family allowances and childcare benefits will be extended until October 31, 2025. Beyond this date, Ukrainians residing in Austria will need to be employed or registered with the Public Employment Service (AMS) to continue receiving these benefits.

According to the Ministry, this new policy aims to streamline family and social support measures. Family Minister Claudia Plakolm expressed that future family benefits would be contingent upon employment status or availability for the labor market. Additionally, family allowances will be provided alongside basic welfare assistance, which remains accessible to all displaced persons.

Plakolm emphasized that Ukrainians have been granted protection in Austria since the onset of the conflict, assuring that the government remains committed to this support. However, she highlighted the necessity for Austria to manage its expenditures more effectively.

Exceptions to these new rules will include individuals under 18, those over 65, and recipients of increased family benefits due to significant disabilities. Previously, the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR) had urged for a swift extension of family benefits for Ukrainian refugee children.
