On Wednesday in Munich city center, around 550 midwives demonstrated for better working and birth conditions.

Bavarian National Midwives (BHLV) and work union Verdi organized the demonstration. According to the organizers, many families with children joined the protest march.

A midwife must sometimes care for up to ten women giving birth. This not only affects the quality of care, but also the quality of training. There is no time for practical guidance, trainees often have to replace full-time midwifes and care for women giving birth.

Non-hospital employed midwives' major problem is the high cost of professional liability insurance. From the low average annual salary of '‚¬23,300 around '‚¬3600 should be paid to the insurance company. These issues for midwifes concern the whole health sector. Health insurance and increased costs for liability insurance affect the quality of care and birth conditions.
