Driver Caught at 151 km/h in Construction Zone on South Motorway, Vehicle Seized

Mon 13th Apr, 2026

Authorities intervened on Saturday evening when a 21-year-old motorist was detected traveling at 151 km/h through a designated construction zone on the South Motorway in the direction of Graz. The incident occurred within the municipality of Bad Fischau, located in the district of Wiener Neustadt.

According to official reports, the motorist overtook an unmarked police vehicle that was traveling within the speed limits of the area. The posted maximum speed for the construction zone was 80 km/h, established to ensure the safety of workers and motorists navigating altered roadway conditions. Upon being overtaken, the undercover police unit initiated a pursuit to verify the speed of the vehicle. The subsequent measurement confirmed that the driver had exceeded the allowed speed by a significant margin.

Law enforcement officers executed a traffic stop shortly after the incident. In accordance with Austrian traffic regulations, exceeding the speed limit by such a considerable amount, particularly in a construction area, is classified as a severe violation. As a result, the driver's license was temporarily revoked on the spot. In addition, authorities impounded the vehicle as a precautionary safety measure and to facilitate further investigation into the circumstances of the offense.

Construction zones on major roadways are frequently subject to enhanced monitoring and stricter enforcement due to the increased risks for both workers and road users. Speed limits are reduced to accommodate changes in traffic patterns, narrowed lanes, and the proximity of construction personnel. Breaching these regulations can result in severe penalties, including the loss of driving privileges and the seizure of the vehicle involved. Road safety experts continually stress the importance of adhering to posted speed limits, particularly in areas where construction activities create unpredictable driving conditions and heightened hazards.

Incidents of excessive speeding, especially in zones with active construction, have prompted authorities across Austria to increase their surveillance through both marked and unmarked patrols. These efforts aim to deter dangerous driving behavior and protect the lives of those working along the motorway as well as other road users. Statistics demonstrate that compliance with temporary speed limits significantly reduces the likelihood and severity of accidents in such high-risk environments.

Following standard procedures, the case will be reviewed by the relevant district administrative authority. The driver faces substantial administrative penalties, including the possibility of a prolonged suspension of driving privileges and significant fines. The vehicle remains in police custody until the completion of administrative proceedings. Officials urge all drivers to observe posted speed limits, especially in construction zones, and remind the public that violations will be met with rigorous enforcement measures to ensure the safety of all.
