Fri 3rd Oct, 2025

On the occasion of the 35th anniversary of German reunification, Chancellor Friedrich Merz emphasized the need for a united effort to address the current challenges facing the nation. Speaking at the annual Unity Day celebration held in Saarbrücken, Merz stated that significant changes are essential to ensure the continued prosperity and improvement of the country.

Merz urged attendees to undertake a collective endeavor towards fostering a new sense of unity within Germany. He highlighted that the country must adapt to thrive in an evolving global landscape, encouraging citizens not to succumb to fears but to embrace transformative changes. Despite acknowledging the successes of German reunification, he pointed out existing issues, particularly the feelings of marginalization among individuals in East Germany and the underrepresentation of East Germans in leadership roles.

The Chancellor also addressed the pressing pressures facing Germany and Europe, citing the emergence of new alliances among autocratic regimes that undermine liberal democracy. He remarked on the changes in the global economic order, characterized by the rise of protectionism and increasing nationalistic tendencies, which have contributed to Germany's economic challenges. Furthermore, he noted that the ongoing influx of irregular migration has polarized society and created divisions.

Merz stressed the importance of national defense, especially in light of threats from Russia, stating that the government would increase defense spending and take measures to counter hybrid threats. He called for a return to economic strength and sustainable prosperity by opposing global protectionism, exploring new markets, and reducing bureaucracy.

In his address, Merz reiterated the necessity for social policy reforms, emphasizing a realistic approach that considers the demographic challenges facing the nation. He highlighted the need for equitable distribution of burdens to ensure the social safety net remains functional. He called upon all citizens to recognize that addressing these challenges is not solely the responsibility of the government, but a collective obligation of the entire populace.

French President Emmanuel Macron, who also attended the Unity Day celebrations, underscored the importance of Franco-German friendship and the defense of democracy in Europe. He reflected on the historical significance of the absence of war between the two nations, framing it as a profound achievement of European unity. However, he cautioned that the specter of conflict is re-emerging, particularly in the context of the ongoing war in Ukraine and the rise of hybrid threats, including cyberattacks and misinformation.

Macron called for a united European front, not only to defend against external threats but also to combat internal challenges to democracy. He warned against the erosion of the rule of law and the rise of divisive rhetoric fueled by social media. He advocated for the regulation of social networks dominated by major corporations to safeguard democratic discourse.

Both leaders emphasized the urgency of confronting these multifaceted challenges collectively, urging citizens to take an active role in shaping the future of their respective nations.
