Major Renovation of L 5344 Railway Underpass in Loosdorf

Fri 13th Jun, 2025

In a significant development for local infrastructure, the railway underpass along the L 5344 highway in Loosdorf, located in the Melk district, is set to undergo comprehensive renovations. The official commencement of the renovation project was announced by local officials, including Deputy Mayor Ing. Birgit Batsch and Member of Parliament Richard Punz, in conjunction with representatives from the Lower Austrian Road Service.

The underpass, originally constructed in 1998 as a 'White Box', has been a critical component of the roadway since the establishment of the Loosdorf business area in 2002. However, it has recently been plagued by substantial wear and tear, particularly in the roadway and structural walls, leading to persistent water seepage issues at the construction joints. As a response to these pressing concerns, the Lower Austrian Road Service's Bridge Construction Department has initiated a plan for a thorough restoration of the underpass.

The renovation efforts will focus on several key areas, including the repair of the existing base plate and walls, as well as the restoration of the elevated edge protections. Additionally, the construction joints will be addressed, and both the waterproofing and asphalt layers will be renewed. The renovation work will be executed by PORR Bau GmbH, a construction company based in Krems, and is scheduled to take place during the summer holidays, with an anticipated completion date of August 24.

The total cost of the renovation is estimated at approximately EUR450,000, with the bulk of the funding--around EUR400,000--being provided by the state of Lower Austria and the remaining EUR50,000 contributed by the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). To facilitate the construction process, the area will be completely closed off to traffic, necessitating a diversion route that will lead drivers through the L 5344, B 1, L 5342, L 5246, and back to L 5344.

For further details regarding the project, interested parties can reach out to the Lower Austrian Road Service at 0676/812-60141, specifically contacting Gerhard Fichtinger via email at gerhard.fichtinger@noel.gv.at.

As this renovation progresses, it underscores the commitment to maintaining and improving regional infrastructure, ensuring safety and efficiency for all road users.
