Lower Austria Celebrates State Holiday, Emphasizing Cultural Heritage and Community Values

The annual State Holiday in Lower Austria was marked with a series of events at Klosterneuburg Abbey, focusing on the importance of cultural traditions, faith, and social cohesion within the region. Provincial Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner addressed the gathering, underscoring the significance of unity and the preservation of long-standing customs as essential to the identity of the state.

Mikl-Leitner highlighted the ongoing efforts to reinforce the sense of togetherness among residents, stressing that shared values and traditions play a crucial role in maintaining social stability. She emphasized the deliberate use of traditional terminology for local festivals and markets, reflecting a commitment to preserving cultural heritage and religious identity throughout Lower Austria.

Klosterneuburg Abbey, with its historical and spiritual legacy, served as the central venue for the holiday's commencement. The site, founded by Saint Leopold, the patron of Lower Austria, has become a symbol of the region's enduring cultural and religious roots. The provincial government has supported restoration projects at the abbey, investing nearly five million euros since 2010 to maintain its historical significance. The day concluded with a formal evening reception at the Festspielhaus St. Pölten, bringing together participants to celebrate the enduring spirit and values of Lower Austria.

The observance also included a reflection on the abbey's history during the Second World War and an announcement of its participation in the global 'Red Wednesday' initiative, which raises awareness about the persecution of Christians worldwide. Renovation projects at the abbey will continue, with further restoration of the city walls planned through 2027, supported by substantial public funding.
