A severe head-on collision on the S5 expressway between Grunddorf and Grafenwörth has resulted in the deaths of a 30-year-old woman and her 62-year-old stepfather, as well as serious injuries to four others, including two young children.
According to reports, the incident occurred in the municipality of Grafenegg when a car traveling towards Tulln lost control and veered into oncoming traffic. Investigations indicate that the driver, who did not possess a valid driving license, was unable to maintain control of her vehicle, causing it to skid across the median. Her car collided laterally with an oncoming vehicle operated by a 43-year-old man from Krems. His wife, aged 41, and their two five-year-old children occupied the passenger and rear seats, respectively.
The force of the collision was significant, causing the car of the 30-year-old driver to be thrown off course. She was ejected from the vehicle and sustained fatal injuries at the scene. Her stepfather, seated in the passenger seat, became trapped in the wreckage. Emergency responders managed to extricate him, but he succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
The impact also forced the family's car into a roadside ditch, leaving all four occupants with serious injuries. Emergency medical personnel transported the victims to nearby hospitals for urgent care. The children and both parents are reported to have sustained severe, but non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash had further consequences when the force of the impact dislodged the engine block from one of the vehicles. A third car subsequently struck the engine block; however, the driver of that vehicle escaped unharmed. Authorities have indicated that the third vehicle's involvement was a direct result of debris created by the initial collision, but no additional injuries were reported.
The S5 expressway was closed for several hours to facilitate rescue operations, accident investigation, and cleanup. The closure, which lasted from approximately 17:40 until 20:30, caused significant traffic disruptions in the region.
Local police have launched a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident, focusing on the lack of a valid driver's license and the events leading up to the vehicle losing control. The authorities are also reviewing road conditions and any potential contributing factors such as speed, weather, and mechanical issues.
This tragic event has prompted renewed discussion about road safety, especially concerning unlicensed drivers and adherence to traffic regulations. Emergency services have commended the swift response of rescue workers and medical personnel, which was critical in managing the aftermath and providing care to the survivors.
The community remains in shock following this devastating incident, with support being offered to those affected. The names of the deceased and injured have not been released in accordance with privacy regulations.
