Environmental Control Report: Continuing as Usual is Not an Option

Mon 6th Oct, 2025

On October 6, 2025, the environmental protection organization GLOBAL 2000 urged the Austrian government to take decisive action in response to the newly released 14th Environmental Control Report. The organization emphasized the need for progressive environmental and climate policies, advocating against outdated road construction projects.

The report spans over 300 pages and includes analyses and recommendations from leading experts in Austria. GLOBAL 2000's climate and energy spokesperson stressed the importance of translating these findings into concrete actions. The organization warned that maintaining the status quo in light of the clearly articulated environmental crisis would be disastrous for both the planet and the health and safety of the Austrian populace.

Among the critical issues highlighted in the report are severe temperature increases, biodiversity loss, heightened risks of extreme weather events and natural disasters, pollution in air and water, and the loss of agricultural land. The report makes it clear that urgent action is required to mitigate these consequences.

Additionally, the report highlights the necessity of a shift in transportation policies, moving away from reliance on individual motorized transport. The spokesperson noted that the report presents compelling data and recommendations regarding mobility, specifically advising against the construction of the controversial Lobau Highway. This project, they argue, would exacerbate traffic congestion and negatively impact air quality and climate while destroying valuable agricultural land and threatening sensitive ecosystems. Instead, the organization advocates for the enhancement of public transportation systems and the development of pedestrian and cycling infrastructure.

The Environmental Control Report ultimately conveys a hopeful message: a sustainable future for Austria is achievable. If swift and consistent actions are taken, many current crises can be addressed effectively. The spokesperson concluded by stating that Austria has the opportunity to become a model for climate and environmental responsibility, ensuring a livable future for generations to come. The onus is now on the government to prepare the nation for future challenges rather than lead it into further environmental and traffic chaos.
