EUROJET Turbo GmbH, the consortium responsible for the EJ200 engine that powers the Eurofighter Typhoon, has finalized a contract with the NATO Eurofighter and Tornado Management Agency (NETMA) for the delivery of up to 54 new EJ200 engines to the Italian Air Force. This agreement is part of Italy's Eurofighter replacement procurement program and revitalizes interest in the EJ200 engine series, following the announcement of the Spanish Halcon II contract late last year.
The contract was signed in Rome by senior representatives from both organizations, marking a significant milestone in the ongoing collaboration between European nations in defense technology. The EJ200 engines will be manufactured by the four partner companies within the EUROJET consortium: Rolls-Royce, MTU Aero Engines, ITP Aero, and Avio Aero, with Avio Aero handling the final assembly in Italy.
Ralf Breiling, the CEO of EUROJET, expressed enthusiasm for the new contract, highlighting it as an affirmation of the strong and enduring confidence nations have in the EJ200 engine and the Eurofighter platform. The EJ200 is recognized for its world-class capabilities, enhancing the performance, range, and overall efficiency of the Eurofighter Typhoon. This order not only reaffirms the partnership between government and industry but also ensures Italy maintains a technological leadership position in the defense sector.
Simon Ellard, the General Manager of NETMA, noted that this new order represents a significant achievement for the Eurofighter program and underscores the aircraft's importance to Europe's collective security. The EJ200 engine continues to provide exceptional performance, ensuring that the Eurofighter is equipped to secure airspace over Italy and the eastern flank of NATO.
The EUROJET consortium is tasked with managing the EJ200 engine program, which includes stakeholders from the UK, Germany, Spain, and Italy. The EJ200 is celebrated for its innovative technology and has consistently demonstrated its outstanding performance in the Eurofighter Typhoon. With unparalleled capability, multi-role functionality, and high availability at competitive life-cycle costs, the EJ200 is ideally suited to meet the challenges faced by air forces today and in the future.
Since the delivery of the first production engine in 2003, over 1,400 EJ200 engines have been supplied to air force fleets across nine nations, accumulating more than 1.8 million flight hours. For further information, high-resolution images of the EJ200 can be downloaded from the EUROJET media website.
