EU Parliament Enhances Water Protection for Secure Supply

Wed 7th May, 2025

The European Parliament has recently approved its recommendations regarding the water resilience strategy expected from the EU Commission in June. This initiative aims to fortify Europe's water supply against crises while laying the groundwork for sustainable water management policies.

According to an EU Parliament representative, access to clean and affordable drinking water is regarded as a fundamental human right and is essential for maintaining good health. The representative emphasized that water issues extend beyond environmental concerns, encompassing security, health, and economic competitiveness.

Currently, approximately 30% of the EU population and 20% of its land area are affected by water stress, exacerbated by climate change, pollution, and overexploitation of resources. The water resilience strategy is intended to ensure that all individuals in Europe maintain reliable access to clean and affordable drinking water in the future. To achieve this, ambitious measures are necessary to enhance the efficiency of water infrastructure and adapt it to the consequences of climate change.

Moreover, it is imperative that targeted funding is allocated in the next EU budget to improve water supplies, assist agriculture and industry in protecting water resources, and support regions particularly impacted by water scarcity.

In addition, the representative highlighted that water security involves not only sufficient supply but also protection against contamination. There is a growing concern regarding harmful substances entering water sources, posing direct health risks. Notably, substances known as 'forever chemicals,' such as PFAS, are particularly alarming as they do not decompose and can accumulate in the human body. Increasing numbers of individuals are found to have these invisible threats in their bloodstream, potentially leading to serious health issues.

It is crucial to stop ignoring this issue and prioritize the protection of both human health and the environment. Therefore, one of the key demands is the strict regulation and phased removal of PFAS and other hazardous substances from circulation. The issue of pesticides and their residues in drinking water also warrants significant attention, as they pose an increasing threat to health and the environment. There is an urgent need for a European research initiative focused on developing and promoting ecological alternatives to chemical pesticides. Only through innovative and sustainable solutions can support be provided to agriculture for more environmentally friendly practices.

Ensuring access to clean drinking water is a fundamental human right and is vital for a healthy life.
