Berlin Parliament Vice President Acknowledges Mistakes During Protest Management

In a recent statement, the Vice President of the Berlin Abgeordnetenhaus, Bahar Haghanipour, acknowledged missteps in handling a protest that occurred within the parliament. Last week, approximately 50 women briefly occupied the staircase of the Abgeordnetenhaus to voice their opposition against proposed budget cuts affecting violence protection programs and women's shelters.

Haghanipour, a member of the Green Party, admitted that she failed to clearly delineate her position as a parliamentary leader during the incident. She expressed understanding for the demands raised by the protesting women's organizations but clarified that the form of protest they employed was inappropriate.

In her remarks, she stated, "I should have made it clear that such actions are not permissible within the parliamentary framework." She emphasized the necessity for maintaining the operational procedures of the parliament at all times, asserting that demonstrations within the parliamentary building do not constitute a legitimate form of expression.

The protest stemmed from concerns regarding funding cuts to critical services aimed at protecting individuals from violence and supporting women's shelters. Following their demonstration, the protesters exited the building peacefully under police supervision.
