Austrian and Albanian Parliamentary Leaders Discuss EU Accession and Strengthen Educational Ties

Senior parliamentary representatives from Austria and Albania convened in Vienna to advance discussions on Albania's prospects for European Union membership and to reinforce bilateral cooperation, particularly in education. The meeting, held at the Austrian parliament, brought together Austrian National Council President Walter Rosenkranz and Albanian parliamentary leader Niko Peleshi, alongside a delegation of Albanian lawmakers.

The central focus of the discussions was Albania's ongoing progress toward EU accession. Both parties acknowledged the significant strides Albania has made in aligning with EU standards, highlighting the country's reforms and its commitment to integration. Rosenkranz emphasized that Albania is in the final stages of the accession process, underscoring the broader importance of this development for Southeast Europe. He noted a preference for referring to the region as Southeast Europe, reflecting a more unified European perspective.

Austria's longstanding support for Albania was noted, particularly in areas such as governance, public administration, and institutional development. Austria has contributed to various projects aimed at bolstering Albania's democratic institutions, including initiatives to modernize parliamentary processes and strengthen administrative capacities. One of the flagship projects mentioned is the "Peter Mahringer" technical college for information technology in Shkodra, which serves as a model for cross-border educational cooperation.

The meeting also saw both sides reaffirming the importance of expanding their partnership in education. Austria's exemplary vocational training system and higher education institutions were highlighted as valuable resources for Albania's ongoing development. The leaders agreed to further enhance joint programs and exchanges, aiming to provide Albanian youth with increased opportunities for skills development and academic advancement.

From the Albanian side, Peleshi expressed appreciation for Austria's consistent support since the country's political transition. He emphasized the significance of this visit to Vienna as his first official foreign trip since assuming the role of parliamentary president.
