The Zillertal Arena, recognized as the largest ski resort in the Zillertal region, is set to commence its winter season on December 5, offering guests a comprehensive range of winter sports opportunities. The resort boasts 150 kilometers of ski slopes and 52 advanced lift systems, catering to families, leisure seekers, and winter sports enthusiasts alike. Its extensive offerings and continuous improvements have garnered the resort several prestigious accolades, including multiple gold awards at the International Ski Area Test 2025 and a repeat five-star rating from Skiresort.at.
One of the key features attracting visitors is the high-altitude snow guarantee, with 77% of the slopes situated above 1,700 meters, ensuring reliable snow conditions throughout the season. The region has also invested significantly in guest comfort and safety, supporting its reputation as a leading winter destination.
Significant investments have been made to modernize the resort's infrastructure. The Rosenalmbahn cable car in Zell am Ziller underwent a comprehensive retrofitting process to enhance sustainability and efficiency. Improvements include a barrier-free level walk-in system for easier boarding, new Omega IV/8 eight-seater cabins, a fully updated electronic control system, and targeted station enhancements. This modernization project represents an investment of approximately 9 million euros.
In addition, the Gerlos ski lift center has focused on upgrading its snowmaking capabilities. Around 12 million euros were allocated in summer 2025 to modernize the snowmaking system. Upgrades include the construction of a new water reservoir (Ebenfeld 2), refurbishment of the existing Ebenfeld 1 reservoir, installation of an energy-efficient pumping station, and renewal of approximately seven kilometers of pipeline. These measures aim to ensure optimal snow reliability, efficient use of resources, and the sustainable development of the resort's technical infrastructure.
The Zillertal Arena is not limited to skiing and snowboarding. It offers a rich variety of winter activities across its four locations--Zell, Gerlos, Wald-Königsleiten, and Krimml-Hochkrimml. Visitors can enjoy winter hiking trails, snowshoe routes, cross-country ski tracks, snow tubing, and the seven-kilometer toboggan run at Gerlosstein. For the first time, the Fichtenschloss attraction will open during the winter months, offering a unique illuminated experience for walkers at dusk. Local gastronomy and welcoming businesses further contribute to the region's appeal as a versatile holiday destination.
The winter season will also feature a series of events, including the Ski Opening in Gerlos, the Herzleuchten event in Zell am Ziller, Moonlight Skiing & Dinner nights, Good Morning Skiing in March, Arena 90s Days, Dutchweek Gerlos, the Bergliebe Mountain Spring in Königsleiten, and the Lederhosen Wedel Finale. These highlights are designed to enhance the visitor experience and offer memorable moments throughout the season.
With its blend of modern infrastructure, diverse winter activities, and recognized excellence, the Zillertal Arena positions itself as a premier destination for those seeking a high-quality winter holiday in Austria.
