Heightened Security Measures Ahead of Zelenskyy's Vienna Visit

Fri 13th Jun, 2025

In preparation for the upcoming visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the Vienna State Police Directorate has announced a ban on public access to areas surrounding the Presidential Chancellery and the Federal Chancellery. This restriction will take effect on June 16 at 9:00 AM. The authorities are also implementing a significant police presence throughout the city during this time.

Two demonstrations are scheduled to occur outside the restricted zone, organized by members of the Ukrainian diaspora and opponents of Zelenskyy's visit. The Ukrainian support rally, organized by the group Mrija, will take place at the Outer Burgtor, while those protesting Zelenskyy's presence will gather at Maria-Theresien-Platz, advocating for peace, neutrality, and sovereignty.

Despite the planned protests, the specific number of police officers deployed has not been disclosed. A spokesperson for the police stated that various units, including special forces such as dog units, WEGA (the special operations unit), and EKO Cobra, will be on duty, alongside district officers and traffic police. The Austrian authorities are also coordinating closely with the security detail of the visiting dignitary.

The presence of the Ukrainian leader will also affect public access to the National Library and the House of Austrian History, both located at Heldenplatz. Due to the imposition of a police cordon, these institutions will remain closed for the entire day on Monday.

As the situation develops, security measures are expected to adapt to ensure the safety of all involved, reflecting the importance of the visit and the heightened focus on security in the region.
