Tue 23rd Sep, 2025

In a distressing incident that has sent shockwaves through the community of Bocholt, a 38-year-old woman was the victim of a violent assault and rape on the early morning of September 14. The attack occurred when the woman, returning home after a night out, stopped to relieve herself near a bush on Meckenemstraße.

According to police reports, the victim had just exited a local establishment around 5 AM when she paused briefly in the bushes. It was during this vulnerable moment that an unknown assailant approached her, overpowering her and subjecting her to a brutal attack. Authorities described the incident as particularly harrowing, with the attacker pushing the woman against a fence, physically assaulting her, and ultimately raping her.

In a remarkable display of courage, the woman managed to escape her attacker. She fled across the street and sought assistance from a nearby young man, with whom she sought refuge as she tried to process the traumatic event. The suspect, however, managed to evade capture and remains at large.

The police have released a composite sketch of the alleged perpetrator and are actively seeking information from the public. The description provided indicates that the suspect is a male of southern European appearance, approximately 25 to 30 years old, around 1.75 meters tall, with short dark hair and a full dark beard. He was noted to have brown eyes and a muscular build, wearing dark jeans and a white t-shirt with black and red lettering at the time of the incident.

Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the assault or the identity of the suspect to come forward, emphasizing that every detail could be critical in their investigation. Witnesses or anyone who may have been in the area around the time of the attack are encouraged to contact the local police department.

This incident is part of a troubling trend in Germany, where reported cases of sexual violence have risen sharply. In 2024, the police noted a significant increase in such crimes, with over 13,300 cases recorded. This represents a 9.3% rise compared to the previous year, raising serious concerns about the safety of women in public spaces.

In light of these statistics, former Interior Minister Nancy Faeser emphasized the urgent need for enhanced protective measures and support systems for women, stating that the rising numbers of sexual offenses necessitate immediate action.

Women affected by sexual violence can access support at any time by calling the dedicated helpline at 116016.
