Construction of Wildlife Bridges on E18 to Begin, Impacting Traffic for Over a Year

The Swedish Transport Administration is initiating the construction of two new wildlife crossings along the E18 highway between Kristinehamn and Karlskoga. The project, designed to enhance road safety and reduce wildlife-related accidents, involves building both an overpass and an underpass specifically engineered for animal crossings.

The decision to proceed follows a comprehensive study launched in 2020. The tender process for the construction contracts is currently underway, with the expectation that groundwork will commence after the summer of 2026. Initial activities will include preparatory measures such as the clearance of vegetation and site setup.

The planned overpass will be located at the start of Bodalsbacken, while the underpass will be positioned between the areas of Sättra and Ristjärn. In addition to these structures, the project involves extending the existing wildlife fencing through the Kristinehamn region. The fencing will feature a denser mesh at the base to prevent smaller animals from accessing the roadway, further reducing the risk of accidents involving wildlife.

While earlier project plans considered installing noise and light barriers on existing bridges to encourage safer animal crossings, these elements have been omitted due to budget constraints. However, specific local roads in the area will see the installation of cattle grids, which are designed to prevent hoofed animals from crossing while allowing pedestrian access.

The main objective of these developments is to provide safe passage for animals, thereby minimizing animal-vehicle collisions along this busy European route. The project is expected to take approximately two years to complete, from autumn 2026 to autumn 2028.

During construction, traffic will be affected, although measures are being taken to minimize disruption. At least one lane in each direction will remain open throughout the construction period, though motorists should anticipate temporary speed reductions when passing the work zones. Occasional short-term closures may occur, particularly during activities such as blasting, but are anticipated to be limited to brief intervals of around ten minutes.

Additionally, a minor diversion may be implemented to route traffic around the construction sites. Despite these adjustments, authorities emphasize that significant congestion or prolonged stoppages are not expected.

The installation of these wildlife passages and related infrastructure aligns with broader efforts to improve traffic safety on Swedish highways. By facilitating the safe movement of animals across the E18, the initiative aims to decrease the frequency and severity of wildlife accidents, contributing to safer road conditions for all users.

Drivers traveling through this section of E18 are advised to remain attentive to signage and temporary traffic arrangements over the duration of the project. The Swedish Transport Administration will provide updates as work progresses to ensure clear communication with the public.
