Following the devastating impacts of a historic flood in September 2024, shipping services in the Wachau region have successfully resumed operations as of early April 2025. This revival comes as the area prepares for the spring tourist season, renowned for its picturesque landscapes and blossoming apricot trees.
The region's primary shipping company, DDSG Blue Danube, has reinstated its full schedule, with boats departing multiple times a day from key locations including Melk and Krems. This recovery is attributed to the collaborative efforts of local businesses, tourism organizations, and the government of Lower Austria, which provided essential support during the restoration process.
In Melk, a newly modernized ticket office has been established, enhancing the passenger experience with improved service and information access. The shipping line's operations include vessels such as the MS Austria, MS Dürnstein, and MS Wachau, which are now sailing regularly to offer visitors a chance to enjoy the scenic beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage region.
The collaboration between various stakeholders has been crucial in restoring the Dürnstein docking station, which experienced significant damage due to the flooding. With the combined efforts of the government and DDSG Blue Danube, the facility has been repaired and is ready for the influx of tourists expected during the peak season.
Passengers can now take advantage of the new ticketing facility and the restored docking capabilities, allowing them to explore the stunning Wachau Valley at their leisure. Boats are scheduled to depart from Krems at 10:15 AM, 11:00 AM, 1:10 PM, and 3:45 PM, while departures from Melk are set for 11:00 AM, 1:50 PM, 2:35 PM, and 4:25 PM.
This timely reopening comes just in time for the Easter holiday, allowing both locals and tourists to experience the rejuvenated Wachau region, which is once again welcoming visitors with its vibrant spring scenery.
