In a significant development for accessible transportation, Vienna has launched its first wheelchair cargo bike, available free of charge for residents. This initiative, part of the city's broader mobility efforts, aims to enhance transportation options for individuals with mobility challenges.
The new wheelchair cargo bike, designed specifically for transporting wheelchairs and their users, is now stationed at Radbande, a bicycle shop located in the Leopoldstadt district. This addition expands the existing Grätzlrad fleet, which has been well-received across various districts since its inception in 2017.
Vienna's mobility councilor has expressed satisfaction with the program's growth, noting that each year, the city supports the addition of several cargo bikes to the fleet. The wheelchair cargo bike features a deep loading area and an integrated ramp, making it easier for users to access the bike safely. A secure harness system ensures that both the wheelchair and the user are safely secured during transport.
The Grätzlrad initiative currently boasts a fleet of 44 cargo bikes available for free rental throughout Vienna. Typically, these bikes can be borrowed for up to a day, but arrangements for longer or shorter rental periods are also possible, including overnight and weekend rentals. The booking process is simplified through an online platform, allowing users to reserve the bikes easily.
In addition to the wheelchair cargo bike, the city continues to expand its cycling infrastructure. The ongoing cycling initiative includes over 250 projects and aims to create nearly 100 kilometers of new cycling routes by the end of the current legislative period. To date, the city has invested approximately 130 million euros into enhancing Vienna's cycling facilities, with more than 50 kilometers already completed.
As a result of these efforts, the number of cyclists has steadily risen, with cycling accounting for 11% of all trips in 2024, up from 7% in 2019. This increase highlights the city's commitment to promoting sustainable transportation options.
For more information on the wheelchair cargo bike and other Grätzlrad services, residents can visit the official booking site. The city's commitment to improving accessibility and expanding its cycling network is expected to benefit all citizens, fostering a more inclusive urban environment.
