A 15-year-old from Vienna, previously sentenced to two years of partially suspended imprisonment for expressing intentions to carry out a terrorist attack, has been released on probation. This development comes after the youth was granted early release from the mandatory part of his sentence, which included an eight-month term. His release occurred under specific conditions at the end of August, ahead of the original sentencing conclusion scheduled for early November. The teenager, who had shown allegiance to the radical terrorist organization Islamic State (IS), was apprehended in March after authorities were alerted by concerned parents regarding his extremist views. He had been sharing IS propaganda, including graphic videos, with classmates, raising alarms about his radicalization. Interestingly, this youth attended the same school as a perpetrator involved in the November 2020 Vienna attack, which resulted in multiple fatalities. Upon examination of his mobile device and online communications, investigators discovered that he idolized the attacker, expressing admiration through various online interactions. Notably, law enforcement discovered an 18-centimeter combat knife in his school locker, which he had acquired following his contemplation of carrying out an attack. Additionally, he had sought out bomb-making instructions online and was particularly interested in methods involving car bombs. In a prior court hearing, he admitted to having considered committing an attack, although he claimed he lacked the capability and resources to execute such plans, stating his age as a limiting factor. The youth converted to Islam in 2024 and rapidly became radicalized through social media platforms, particularly TikTok. He connected with other like-minded individuals, forming a network that included several young IS supporters in Vienna. This group has been linked to thwarted terrorist plots, including one involving a 15-year-old who was recently sentenced for planning an attack at a key railway station in the city. In response to his release, the court has imposed a contact prohibition with certain individuals linked to his extremist network. Furthermore, he is required to participate in a deradicalization program and continue his education, with regular check-ins with probation services mandated. Authorities remain vigilant regarding the activities of youth radicalization and the potential for domestic terrorism, especially among younger demographics influenced by extremist ideologies online. The situation highlights ongoing concerns surrounding radicalization and the recruitment of minors by terrorist organizations, emphasizing the need for preventive measures and community awareness.
