Court Proceedings Follow Violent Incidents After Vienna Football Derby

The aftermath of the 343rd Vienna football derby, held at the Allianz Stadion in Hütteldorf on September 22, 2024, has shifted from the pitch to the courtroom. Legal proceedings commenced against 22 individuals alleged to have participated in violent clashes following the match between SK Rapid Wien and FK Austria Wien. The charges include aggravated group violence, attempted serious bodily harm, property damage, and attempted resistance against law enforcement.

During the first day of hearings at the Vienna Regional Criminal Court, eight cases were resolved through diversion measures. Those involved agreed to accept responsibility for their actions, pay compensation to an injured police officer, and reimburse SK Rapid for damages. In addition to financial penalties and legal costs, each received a two-year stadium ban covering all league, cup, and national team matches.

The post-match unrest erupted after SK Rapid secured a 2-1 victory. Following the final whistle, pyrotechnics were thrown onto the field, and dozens of hooligans stormed the pitch. A security lapse allowed some supporters, many wearing face coverings, to access the playing area from the visiting fan section. Video surveillance assisted in identifying some participants, though many remain unidentified.

Of the accused, aged between 20 and 62, the majority are FK Austria supporters, with a small number linked to SK Rapid. Legal representatives emphasized that most defendants had no prior criminal records and acknowledged the negative impact of such violent incidents on the sport's reputation.

One particularly notable incident involved a former fan liaison officer of SK Rapid, who was captured on television striking a rival supporter with a corner flag. The club responded by terminating his employment and issuing a stadium ban. Legal defense argued that the actions, while serious, were less dangerous due to the nature of the object involved.

Other cases involved accusations of throwing metal objects and other forms of physical aggression. Several police officers sustained injuries, including contusions and dental damage, during the disturbances. The prosecution described the scene as chaotic, highlighting the risks faced by law enforcement personnel during the altercation.

Some defendants reported personal consequences beyond legal sanctions, with one individual citing pressure from family members to choose between attending football matches and maintaining family relationships.

The presiding judge questioned the motivations behind joining the disorder, reflecting broader concerns about fan violence at sporting events. The court has scheduled additional hearings to continue addressing the cases, with proceedings expected to last into April.
