The Vienna Central Station is set to undergo significant renovations just a decade after its initial construction, as the city plans to redesign the plazas in front of its entrances. This initiative aims to replace the current stark concrete spaces with greener, more inviting environments.
With urban planning trends evolving, city officials recognize the necessity of adapting public spaces to meet environmental demands. The revitalization project will introduce greenery, including 35 new trees, alongside seven mist columns to enhance the aesthetic and environmental quality of the area. Where planting trees is not feasible--due to underlying train tracks--landscapers will utilize a combination of ornamental grasses and climbing plants to provide a lush, vibrant atmosphere.
In total, approximately 3,500 square meters of pavement will be removed to make way for these improvements. The city will also enhance seating areas and transform existing bike lanes into a dedicated, physically separated cycling path to improve safety for cyclists.
City planning officials have highlighted that this project is part of a broader effort to transform urban spaces across Vienna. Over the past four years, they have completed around 320 projects, reclaiming land equivalent to 34 football fields, with a significant portion being repurposed for green space. Officials noted that the funding for these transformations has been fully utilized, with investments totaling around 100 million euros.
The redevelopment of the plaza is a collaborative effort between the City of Vienna and the Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB). The city will oversee and finance the upgrades at the main entrance on Wiedner Gürtel, while ÖBB will manage the enhancements on the rear plaza facing Sonnwendviertel.
The renovation work is set to commence in 2026, beginning with the area behind the station in the spring, followed by the front plaza during the summer months. As urban landscapes continue to evolve, this project represents a commitment to sustainability and improved quality of life for residents and visitors alike.
