Residents Safely Evacuated After Basement Fire in Veitsau Residential Complex

Emergency services were called to a significant incident in the Veitsau district of Berndorf when a fire broke out in the basement of a multi-story residential building during the early hours of Sunday. Local fire brigades from Veitsau, Berndorf-Stadt, St. Veit/Triesting, and Pottenstein responded promptly after a call reported smoke coming from the lower level of the apartment block.

Upon arrival, firefighters observed dense smoke billowing from the cellar area, prompting immediate action to secure the building and safeguard its occupants. The operation was led by the local fire chief, who initiated evacuation procedures while coordinating with police to alert and remove residents from their apartments. Many individuals, roused from sleep by emergency responders, were ushered out quickly to prevent exposure to potentially hazardous smoke.

Firefighters equipped with breathing apparatus entered the building's stairwell to reach the affected basement section. While the first team focused on evacuating residents, a second unit searched the cellar to pinpoint the source of the blaze. The fire was located within a storage unit, and coordinated efforts were made to contain and extinguish the flames. Additional fire engines arrived at the scene, and water lines were established to support ongoing suppression activities.
