Fire at Remote Hunting Lodge in Upper Austria Prompts Major Firefighting Response

Sat 6th Dec, 2025

A significant fire broke out at a hunting lodge in Molln, located in the Kirchdorf district of Upper Austria, leading to an extensive emergency response by local fire brigades. The incident occurred on Friday evening when a power generator, operated by the lodge's tenant, malfunctioned and ignited a blaze within the premises.

According to official reports, the tenant, a 72-year-old man, had started a petrol-powered generator which subsequently caught fire. Despite the tenant's immediate efforts to extinguish the flames using a fire extinguisher, the attempt was unsuccessful. Recognizing the severity of the situation, the individual promptly contacted the fire department for assistance.

The location of the lodge, situated in a remote area, posed logistical challenges for the emergency teams. Starting at approximately 18:30, a total of eleven fire brigades were dispatched to the scene, mobilizing around 120 firefighters to combat the spreading fire. The difficult terrain and the isolated position of the lodge necessitated a coordinated and sustained operation to bring the fire under control.

Fire crews worked throughout the evening and into the early morning hours to extinguish the fire and prevent it from spreading to the surrounding forested areas. The extended duration of the operation was attributed to the limited accessibility of the site, the presence of flammable materials, and the need for careful management of resources in the remote environment.

Preliminary investigations by the authorities indicate that the fire originated at the generator. While the lodge sustained considerable damage, there were no reports of injuries among the occupants or emergency personnel. The rapid response and coordinated efforts of the multiple fire brigades were instrumental in containing the fire and protecting nearby natural resources.

Following the incident, local officials have highlighted the importance of strict safety protocols when operating generators in isolated or woodland locations. The event has also prompted a review of emergency preparedness measures for similar remote properties within the region.

The cause of the generator malfunction remains under investigation. Fire safety experts have been called in to assess the site and provide recommendations to prevent such incidents in the future. The local fire department praised the swift action taken by the lodge's tenant, whose decision to seek help quickly ensured that the fire did not result in more extensive destruction or risk to human life.

This incident underscores the vital role of community-based fire brigades in rural and remote areas, demonstrating their readiness to respond to emergencies that occur in challenging conditions. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and will release further updates as more information becomes available regarding the cause and aftermath of the fire.
