The University of Salzburg is stepping up its commitment to journalism education by establishing a new student-led editorial team. Under the guidance of experienced professionals, 15 journalism students from the Paris Lodron University of Salzburg will publish content on the online platform campus-a.at, focusing on current issues in economics, politics, and culture.
The initiative is spearheaded by the campus a Academy for Journalism, which draws inspiration from the renowned journalist Hugo Portisch. The project aims to provide students with practical experience in journalism while navigating the complexities of contemporary media landscapes. Project leader Thomas Birkner emphasized the importance of journalism in today's politically and socially turbulent times, stating that despite challenges, there remains a strong passion among young people for the field. He believes that supporting students on their journey into journalism is crucial for the future of democratic discourse.
The project has gained financial backing from sponsors such as DM and Salzburg AG, ensuring its viability and sustainability. Editorial meetings will be held both in-person at the university and through digital platforms, allowing for flexible engagement among participants. This dual approach fosters collaboration and the effective exchange of ideas.
Students will receive guidance from seasoned journalists, primarily through online interactions, allowing them to learn from real-world experiences. Each article produced will be compensated with a payment of 120 euros, providing students with an incentive to contribute quality content.
Leaders of the campus a Academy, Silvia Jelincic and Bernhard Salomon, expressed their commitment to preparing students for a future where independent journalism plays a vital role in safeguarding European liberal democracy. They aim to equip aspiring journalists with practical insights that will serve them in their careers.
As the landscape of journalism continues to evolve, programs like this one at the University of Salzburg are essential for nurturing the next generation of media professionals. By fostering a new breed of journalists, the university aims to uphold the values of integrity and independence that are foundational to a thriving democracy.
