Trump Releases Classified Documents on Kennedy Assassination

Former U.S. President Donald Trump made headlines on Tuesday by disclosing previously classified documents related to the assassination of President John F. Kennedy in 1963. Trump announced to reporters that the release would encompass a substantial volume of 80,000 pages of material, which the National Archives of the United States will make accessible to the public. In addition to the Kennedy files, Trump also expressed intentions to release classified documents pertaining to the assassination of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

The assassination of Kennedy has captivated American public interest for decades. Although official investigations have identified Lee Harvey Oswald as the lone gunman in the shooting, many Americans remain skeptical, believing in various conspiracy theories surrounding the event. Experts suggest that the newly available information is unlikely to alter the established facts of the case. It is widely accepted that Oswald fired upon Kennedy from a window of a school book depository as the presidential motorcade passed through Dealey Plaza in Dallas.

Political analyst Larry Sabato, who has authored a book on the assassination, cautioned that those hoping for groundbreaking revelations may be disappointed with the content of the newly released documents.

Adding another layer to the discussion, Robert F. Kennedy Jr., the U.S. Secretary of Health and Human Services, and the son of Robert Kennedy, has expressed his belief that the CIA may have played a role in his uncle's assassination. This assertion has been met with strong denials from the agency, which labeled the claims as unfounded. Nevertheless, it remains uncertain whether the documents released by Trump will shed new light on the CIA's knowledge of Oswald, particularly regarding his visits to the Soviet Embassy in Mexico City just six weeks before the assassination.

During his first term from 2017 to 2021, Trump had previously indicated his intent to declassify documents related to the Kennedy assassination and did release some materials at that time. However, he ultimately succumbed to pressure from the CIA and FBI, withholding a significant portion of the documents due to concerns over national security.
