Tree Losses at Tulln's Nibelungenplatz Prompt Replacement Efforts

The recently renovated Nibelungenplatz in Tulln, which was unveiled less than a year ago, is facing unexpected challenges with its newly planted trees. Out of the 38 trees initially planted, five have already perished, raising concerns among local authorities about the health of the urban greenery.

In the past week, a significant oak tree was removed due to an infestation by pests. According to the municipal authorities, the tree's defense mechanisms were compromised due to its status as a newly planted specimen. To address this loss, a replacement has been implemented. A 20-year-old Hungarian silver lime tree has been donated by a local company, Kittenberger, and was planted at no cost by Richter, a local gardening firm. Notably, the mayor of Tulln, Peter Eisenschenk, alongside Reinhard Kittenberger, actively participated in the planting process.

The newly planted silver lime tree is considered well-suited for urban environments, as it does not produce sticky residues and is resilient to city conditions. It was cultivated in a large container, ensuring that its roots remained intact during the relocation, which enhances its chances of successful establishment. This method guarantees a 100% survival rate even during summer plantings, as explained by Kittenberger.

Among the remaining 37 trees, four had to be replaced as well. These trees were of lesser value compared to the oak and originated from a nursery in the Netherlands. The reasons for their replacement varied; one tree failed to take root properly and was replaced under the supplier's warranty at no extra cost. The remaining three trees suffered from pest issues or stem damage, although the specific causes of these problems were not clearly identified. One of these trees was replaced at no charge by the supplier, while the municipality incurred costs for the other two replacements and their planting, which amounted to approximately EUR5,000.

This situation highlights the ongoing challenges faced by urban forestry initiatives, particularly in adapting to pests and ensuring the health of newly planted trees. The city remains committed to maintaining and enhancing its green spaces, despite the setbacks encountered in this recent planting endeavor.
