Telemedicine in Action: Rote Kreuz NÖ's Telenotarzt Surpasses 1,000 Deployments

Thu 10th Apr, 2025

The Telenotarzt system, implemented by Rote Kreuz Niederösterreich, has successfully been utilized over 1,000 times since its inception, demonstrating its efficacy in providing remote medical assistance. Initially launched in November 2020 as a pilot program, the service transitioned to a full 24-hour operation on September 1 of the previous year.

This innovative approach to emergency medical services has now expanded beyond Lower Austria, finding applications in Carinthia, Vorarlberg, Upper Austria, and Salzburg. The program's president noted that the implementation is progressing well, with a noticeable increase in demand for telemedicine services.

Currently, approximately 150 telemedicine interventions are being conducted each month, a figure that is expected to rise as more emergency services integrate this technology. The system treats requests from all participating provinces equally, ensuring that medical assistance is available regardless of location.

At present, a team of 20 telemedicine doctors is on duty, working in shifts to provide round-the-clock support. The primary focus of these remote interventions includes real-time evaluations of electrocardiograms (EKGs), allowing paramedics to consult with medical professionals during critical situations. This collaboration enhances the quality of emergency care provided to patients before they reach a hospital.

The Telenotarzt initiative aims to bridge the gap between non-medical emergency personnel and medical experts, allowing for immediate guidance and support during emergency situations. By integrating telemedicine into the emergency response framework, the program not only improves patient outcomes but also optimizes the efficiency of the healthcare system.

As the demand for telehealth services continues to grow, Rote Kreuz NÖ is committed to further expanding the reach and capabilities of the Telenotarzt program. The ongoing success of this system highlights the potential of telemedicine in revolutionizing emergency healthcare delivery.
