In a recent video statement, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson expressed his disappointment regarding the United States' announcement of a 20% tariff on imports from the European Union, which was made public on Wednesday. He emphasized the importance of free trade and open competition, which he believes have been fundamental to the success of Western economies.
Kristersson stated that Sweden is committed to opposing trade barriers and preventing a trade war, emphasizing that such conflicts could lead to economic hardship for populations and increased global instability. He made it clear that Sweden will continue to advocate for free trade principles.
The Minister for Foreign Trade, Benjamin Dousa, also weighed in on the situation, praising the current trading system that the US seems to be abandoning. He highlighted that trade has historically contributed to significant human progress. In a message to the media, he cautioned that the figures presented by former President Donald Trump during the announcement were misleading, noting that the actual tariff rates between the US and EU differ by mere fractions of a percent rather than the dramatic percentages suggested.
In response to the US tariff announcement, Dousa indicated that Europe is open to negotiations but is also prepared to respond decisively if necessary. He reassured that the government is dedicated to reversing this trend, with new free trade agreements on the table that could potentially eliminate tariffs entirely and expand market access for Swedish businesses.
Kristersson further stated that Sweden's robust public finances position the country well to navigate the potential challenges posed by these tariffs. He expressed hope that through diplomatic negotiations, it would be possible to mitigate the impact of the tariffs introduced by the US. Both he and Dousa affirmed that discussions are ongoing within the European Union to address these trade issues effectively.
