Sweden Democrats Propose Cold Beer Sales and Lower Food VAT

Sun 7th Jun, 2026

The Sweden Democrats have unveiled their new electoral platform, emphasizing a vision for Sweden characterized by security, freedom, and a distinctly Swedish identity. The platform is set to be debated and finalized during the party's upcoming conference in Upplands Väsby from June 12 to 14. The party leadership is positioning this document as a definitive statement that their four-year role as a support party to the Tidö coalition will not continue after the next election. Instead, the Sweden Democrats intend either to participate in government or to assume an opposition role, reflecting recent assurances by leaders of the Liberals and Moderates about the party's future involvement in government if the current coalition prevails.

The platform outlines several policy priorities aimed at shaping daily life in Sweden. Among the proposed measures are the introduction of cold beer sales at Systembolaget, Sweden's state alcohol retailer, and the potential for extended Sunday opening hours. The party's vision for the future population of Sweden includes both native Swedes and immigrants who have integrated into Swedish society. The platform emphasizes that a safe society is not only about public security but also about economic stability, pledging affordable dental care for all and universal unemployment insurance. Additionally, the party calls for a review of sick leave deduction rules, especially for employees in the welfare sector, and aims to reduce bureaucratic obstacles and perceived activism within government agencies.

The Sweden Democrats stress that future governments will need to make difficult decisions regarding state expenditures to fund significant reforms. The party proposes a further reduction in foreign aid and advocates for the eventual abolition of the electricity tax, which reportedly generated SEK 31.5 billion in state revenue in 2024 according to economic statistics. Another key fiscal proposal is to make permanent the currently reduced value-added tax (VAT) on food, which was temporarily halved from 12 percent to 6 percent in April and is scheduled to revert in 2028. Extending this VAT reduction through 2027 is estimated to reduce tax revenues by SEK 37 billion.

In the area of public safety and justice, the Sweden Democrats have put forward a zero-tolerance approach to sexual crimes against children and advocate for the creation of a public register of convicted offenders. These proposals come at a time when the party has faced internal challenges, including the recent resignation of a prominent member of parliament following allegations of serious criminal conduct.

The party's platform also addresses regulatory simplifications and a reduction in what it describes as unnecessary administrative burdens. These measures are intended to streamline government operations and enhance efficiency across various sectors. The Sweden Democrats' approach reflects a broader ambition to reshape Swedish society through targeted reforms, fiscal restraint, and a focus on national identity.

As the party's conference approaches, these policy positions are expected to be central to internal debates and to the broader public discussion on the future direction of Swedish politics. The proposals regarding alcohol sales, tax policy, and welfare benefits will likely attract attention from both supporters and critics as the next election cycle approaches.
