Swedish public service broadcaster SVT has encountered multiple distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks, causing significant technical disruptions over the weekend. The latest incident occurred late Tuesday evening and persisted throughout the night, impacting services on SVT Play.
According to SVT's Chief Technology Officer, the most recent attack commenced after 9 PM on Tuesday and involved overwhelming amounts of data directed at the broadcaster while they were attempting to distribute content to audiences, other locations, and internal systems. This cyber onslaught attempts to obstruct data transmission, prompting a continuous struggle between SVT's technical teams and their service providers to mitigate the impact.
In response to the situation, Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson addressed the issue during a parliamentary debate, stating that Sweden is under persistent cybersecurity threats, with DDoS attacks targeting not only government agencies but also critical Swedish businesses.
Granberg expressed concerns about the likelihood of future attacks, emphasizing the determination of SVT's team to withstand these challenges. He refrained from speculating on the perpetrators behind these attacks, asserting that they are orchestrated by entities with the intention to influence Swedish society.
In light of SVT's role in national defense, the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency (MSB) is collaborating with the broadcaster to investigate and address these cyber threats effectively.
It is important to note that there was a correction made regarding earlier reports suggesting that the Swedish Parliament's website was also affected by these attacks; this claim has been retracted.
For further updates on the situation, SVT has expressed regret over the ongoing DDoS attacks, labeling them as deeply concerning.
