SOS Children's Villages Austria Suspended by International Federation Amid Abuse Allegations

The international governing body of SOS Children's Villages has announced the suspension of its Austrian branch following serious allegations of abuse. This decision was made during a special meeting held in response to reports concerning misconduct within the organization. SOS Children's Villages Austria has acknowledged the temporary suspension and stated its commitment to full cooperation with all relevant authorities and oversight bodies.

According to the federation, this measure aligns with the organization's regulations, which allow for the suspension of member associations facing allegations of severe misconduct or systemic issues that require further examination. The main focus remains on thoroughly investigating the reported cases and restructuring the organization as needed within Austria. The suspension does not alter the ongoing efforts to address the accusations and implement reforms.

The suspension follows revelations that Hermann Gmeiner, the founder of SOS Children's Villages, allegedly committed sexual abuse against at least eight boys. While the full extent of these incidents has not been publicly disclosed, the organization's victim protection commission has investigated the cases with strict confidentiality to safeguard those affected. A reform committee has now requested anonymized reports to gain more insight into the nature and patterns of the alleged abuse, as well as any possible knowledge or involvement of others within the organization.

Between 2013 and 2023, the victim protection commission received approximately 200 reports, with eight specifically involving Gmeiner. In these cases, individuals reported credible experiences of sexual violence, leading to compensation of up to 25,000 euros and support for therapy costs. However, comprehensive internal investigations into these claims were limited due to confidentiality restrictions, and the details have not been widely shared within the organization. The reform committee is expected to provide a preliminary assessment soon, with the possibility of identifying broader patterns or additional parties involved.

As of now, there have been no official criminal complaints filed with the Innsbruck public prosecutor's office regarding these allegations, as only the affected individuals could initiate such proceedings. Consequently, no formal law enforcement investigations have commenced.

Additionally, a previous case has come under renewed examination. In 2022, reports emerged implicating a prominent Austrian donor in the sexual abuse of eight boys during his visits to a Southeast Asian country, where the children were under the care of SOS Children's Villages. The donor, who has since passed away, allegedly traveled to the region multiple times between 2010 and 2014. After staff at the facility reported concerns, the donor's visits were discontinued, and the case was classified at the time as an isolated incident. While the reform committee is aware of this situation, its current focus remains on incidents and organizational structures within Austria, with investigations into international connections postponed for the time being.

The organization has reiterated its dedication to transparency, accountability, and comprehensive reform to ensure the safety and well-being of all children under its care.
