The Spanish holiday destination of Ibiza has been severely impacted by unprecedented rainfall, attributed to the remnants of Hurricane Gabrielle. The torrential downpour has caused widespread flooding, disrupting life for both locals and tourists alike. According to Spain's meteorological agency Aemet, Tuesday marked the rainiest day on record for Ibiza since measurements began in 1952.
The heavy rainfall plunged the island into turmoil, leading to numerous incidents. A significant landslide occurred near a hotel in Eivissa (Ibiza Town), resulting in three individuals suffering minor injuries. The hotel chain Vibra reported that around 220 guests were evacuated and relocated to another facility due to safety concerns.
Reports indicate that many streets in Ibiza were submerged, with water levels rising to chest height in some areas. Footage captured by travelers showed visitors wading through flooded roads with their luggage. By Wednesday, access to the airport remained partially blocked due to flooding, and water was observed dripping from the ceiling in certain sections of the terminal. This led to numerous flight delays and diversions.
Emergency services, including firefighters and police, were on high alert, responding to nearly 200 weather-related incidents throughout the day. These incidents included flooding, landslides, fallen trees, and damage to water and electricity infrastructure. Rescue teams were deployed to assist individuals trapped in vehicles and homes.
Despite the rainfall having ceased, the island continues to face challenges, as many streets, residences, and garages remain inundated. Aemet reported that Ibiza City received an astonishing 254 liters of rain per square meter within a 24-hour period, which constitutes more than half of the typical annual rainfall for the region. The airport recorded 174 liters during the same timeframe, marking unprecedented levels since record-keeping began.
Other regions in eastern and northeastern Spain also experienced adverse weather conditions due to the effects of Hurricane Gabrielle, with the Valencia region being particularly hard hit. However, by Wednesday, sunny weather returned to most areas, with no further rain forecasted.
